To Elope Or Not To Elope

The decision whether or not to elope is not one to be made lightly. While it's true that many lovers have wed after a spur of the moment decision, the best thing to do is take a little time and make sure eloping is right for you. The first use of the word elope was to describe a married woman who ran away with her paramour. Eventually to elope meant to run away and get married, and usually referred to young lovers forbidden to be together by their families. Today eloping is quite common and is done for a variety of different reasons.


You may decide to elope if you don't have the money or inclination for a formal wedding ceremony and reception. The cheapest way to elope is at your local Justice of the Peace office. You will need to pay for your marriage license, pay the fee for the service which is usually under $100 and that's usually all there is to it. Some states may require blood tests and/or a waiting period for residents. Of course you might be looking for something a bit more romantic. If so there are plenty of great destinations where you can elope in style.

Las Vegas is a very popular destination for eloping lovers because they have so many different wedding packages and chapels. In addition to well-known landmarks like the Little White Chapel (which has a $49 drive through window) there are chapels in luxurious casino resorts. Other popular locations for eloping couples include Hawaii, the Caribbean, Niagara Falls, Napa Valley and Pigeon Forge. Whether you choose to elope close to home or travel to an exotic destination to tie the knot, make sure you are doing the right thing.

Eloping might be the right choice for you if you are absolutely certain marriage is in the cards. If you have been engaged for awhile and decide a traditional wedding is not what you want, to elope can be the perfect choice. However if you have family and friends who might be offended by your decision not to include them, explain your motivation and plans before going through with anything. Many couples who elope plan a celebratory party for friends and family afterwards. However if you aren't sure about the decision to elope give yourself more time to think it over.
